12 things to make with an apple slicer that are not apples

Twelve blades, twelve ideas. Pears, potatoes, onions and one dessert you will make every week.

An apple slicer cores and wedges in one press. The frame on ours is 12 cm across, which means a lot of produce fits. Here is what we press through it.

  1. Pears for a cheese board. Firm Bosc pears wedge cleanly and the core comes out with the seeds.
  2. Potato wedges. Trim the ends, press, toss with oil and salt, roast at 425°F for 30 minutes.
  3. Sweet potato fries. Same method. Cut each wedge in half lengthwise for thinner fries.
  4. Onion wedges for roasting. Peel, press. Perfect wedges for a sheet-pan dinner.
  5. Apple chips. Wedge, then run the wedges through a mandoline at 1 mm and bake low and slow.
  6. Pear tarte tatin. Twelve slim wedges arrange into a perfect fan.
  7. Beet wedges. Boil first, press when cool. Wear a towel over your hand.
  8. Peach wedges for the grill. Firm peaches only. Pit comes out with the core piece.
  9. Lunchbox apples. Press, squeeze a little lemon, rubber band the apple back together and it will not brown by noon.
  10. Caramel apple bar. Wedges, skewers, caramel, toppings. The best birthday party food that takes no cooking.
  11. Turnips for a gratin. Press, then slice thin.
  12. Baked apples with cinnamon. Press and arrange in a dish with butter, brown sugar and oats. 25 minutes at 375°F.

The one trick

Center the corer ring over the stem. If it is off-center, one wedge keeps a bit of core. Look down the ring before you press.
