How to keep cotton kitchen towels absorbent for years

The reason your towels stopped absorbing is fabric softener. Here is the wash routine that keeps terry working.

Cotton terry is absorbent because its loops have a huge surface area and nothing coating them. Everything that ruins a towel is something that coats the cotton.

Wash before first use

New towels carry finishing agents from the mill. One warm wash opens the loops. They will shed a little lint on that first wash; that is normal and it stops.

Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets

Both leave a waxy film that repels water. If your towels push water around instead of soaking it up, this is why. A cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle strips the film in one wash.

Warm water, regular detergent

Hot water is fine for whites and very dirty towels. Warm is enough for everyday. Use the normal amount of detergent; too much leaves residue.

Tumble dry low, or line dry

High heat weakens cotton fibers over time. Low heat or a line keeps them plush.

Rotate six

A six-pack exists so each towel gets a day off. Swap daily, wash the week's towels together, and no towel ever gets the sour smell that comes from staying damp.

Stains

Tomato and turmeric come out with sunlight. Grease comes out with dish soap rubbed in before washing. Wine comes out with cold water and salt, immediately.

When to retire a towel

When the border frays or the pile goes flat. Old kitchen towels make excellent rags for the garage and the car.
